CHRISTMAS CONCERTS

"Come Celebrate Christmas with DJC!"

The David Johnson Chorus kicks its fourteenth season into high gear by presenting its annual family favorite “Come Celebrate Christmas” concerts.  People throughout the region have made attending these musical treats part of their holiday family tradition.

This year’s concert is a balanced blend of old and new.

Several songs will remind everyone how important home is during the holidays:  “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Nowhere Else But Home,” “The Christmas Song” (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire).

Familiar songs like “Deck the Halls,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” and “It’s Beginning to Look Like Christmas,” are sure to have the audience humming along.

No DJC concert is complete without their signature a cappella numbers.  “Sweet Little Jesus Boy,” “Glory, Glory to the Newborn King,” and “Run to the Manger” are stunning examples of this genre of music.

As usual, these DJC concerts will have a surprise that makes people smile and laugh.  “North Pole Rock and Roll” will have the audience dancing in the aisles!

A very special segment of selections from Handel’s “The Messiah” will be a highlight of this year’s “Come Celebrate Christmas.”

SPRING CONCERTS

"Songs of Hope and Peace"

The David Johnson Chorus' Spring season will be busy!

In addition to presenting their Concert Series “Songs of Hope and Peace,” they will be preparing for the World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"Songs of Hope and Peace" is designed to touch people who find themselves struggling in dealing with life and its difficulties.

Our world, and even our country, appears to be very fragmented, creating anxiety and worries among us all.  Music, the universal language, can speak to these issues in ways that nothing else can.

The first half of the show will be a chronological tour of America’s earliest song writers, beginning with Stephen Foster in the 1800’s (“O Susanna,” “Camp Town Races,” “Beautiful Dreamer”).  Next will be a medley of beautiful ballads by Jerome Kern from the ‘20’s (“Ol’ Man River," “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “Look for the Silver Lining”).  One of the most famous of American composers was Irving Berlin.  His medley includes (“God Bless America,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business”).  Rounding out the first half of the show will be a rousing number by George M. Cohan (and featuring the DJC kazoo band!).

In the second half of the show, songs will be featured that were written in response to calamities:  the tsunami in Indonesia, the war in Bosnia, the 911 disaster and the War Between the States.  The message will be words of healing, but also reminders of the importance of being united for the common good of mankind.

Everyone will be moved by the experience of DJC’s “Songs of Hope and Peace.”
