Our Director
David Johnson, the music director of the Chorus, began his music education at an early age. As a young boy he attended many singing schools that were a part of his rural Southern landscape in the 50's and 60's, learning to sing parts and read "shape" notes. He was leading singing in churches by the age of 10. His parents consistently bought and played albums by the Robert Shaw Chorale, planting an appreciation for a cappella choral music. As a student in school he played in the school band, sang in the school chorus and taught himself to play the guitar and perform. In college David attended Freed-Hardeman University and the University of Tennessee at Martin majoring in music. This led him to establishing a choral program in Dresden, Tennessee, where he taught for nine years. David Johnson has and continues to live a full and varied life. He's been married for 38 years, has two children and six grandchildren. He has a B.S. in Education and a Master's Degree in Social Work. David is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and has served as the Clinical director of the Christian Counseling Center of Western Kentucky, the Treatment Director of Spirit Lake Recovery, and is currently the counselor at the McKenzie Medical Center in McKenzie, TN. He is a speaker at workshops and conducts marriage retreats. David enjoys writing in his spare time. David has been described as "a dare-to-dream kind of guy" and an individual who is committed to excellence. Believing nothing is impossible and that dreams do come true, David has never been shy about pushing others and challenging them to be the best they can possibly be. |
